Rowland Medical Library Resources: Bates’ Visual Guide to Physical Examination

Bates’ Visual Guide to Physical Examination is an instructional video collection of head-to-toe and body systems-based physical examination techniques.

The video collection is organized into three sections: 

• Physical Examinations: includes physical exams on adults, infants, children, and older adults 

• Communication and Interpersonal Skills: include topics like active listening, empathy, guiding questioning, body language, and using non-stigmatizing language 

• OSCE Clinical Skills: integrates communication, history taking, physical examination, clinical reasoning, and medical knowledge in a standardized medical scenario

The videos complement the widely used textbook, Bates’ Guide to Physical Examination and History Taking. Medical educators can integrate persistent URLs of videos and book chapters into their Canvas course design to enhance instruction and student preparedness for clinical patient encounters.
